چکیده

Quantum annealing (QA) has been proposed as a quantum enhanced optimization heuristic exploiting tunneling. Here, we demonstrate how finite range tunneling can provide considerable computational advantage. For a crafted problem designed to have tall and narrow energy barriers separating local minima, the D-Wave 2X quantum annealer achieves significant runtime advantages relative to Simulated Annealing (SA). For instances with 945 variables this results in a time-to-99%success-probability that is ∼ 10 times faster than SA running on a single processor core. We also compared physical QA with Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC), an algorithm that emulates quantum tunneling on classical processors. We observe a substantial constant overhead against physical QA: D-Wave 2X runs up to ∼ 10 times faster than an optimized implementation of QMC on a single core. To investigate whether finite range tunneling will also confer an advantage for problems of practical interest, we conduct numerical studies on binary optimization problems that cannot yet be represented on quantum hardware. For random instances of the number partitioning problem, we find numerically that QMC, as well as other algorithms designed to simulate QA, scale better than SA and better than the best known classical algorithms for this problem. We discuss the implications of these findings for the design of next generation quantum annealers.

The Pattern of Ground Deformations due to Circular Tunneling

This paper presents the results of a recent study about the following aspects relevant to tunneling in soft grounds:e) The domain of deformations due to tunneling in soft ground can be specified within a boundary of a parabolic shape. This boundary is defined by a parabolic formula as a function of a central angle which depends on the soil type i.e., either cohesive or cohesionless. This para...

Applicability of Elastic Analysis for Predicting the Settlement Distribution Around Tunneling in Soft Ground (TECHNICAL NOTE)

In this article a brief review of the literature on the subject is cited. The method of analysis by a finite element program is discussed in which the effect of different influential parameters are examined. The results of these computations are then compared to the corresponding empirical data and two other existing formulae for two dimensional cases. The comparisons show quite reliable and ac...

Computational study of bandgap-engineered Graphene nano ribbon tunneling field-effect transistor (BE-GNR-TFET)

By applying tensile local uniaxial strain on 5 nm of drain region and compressive local uniaxial strain on 2.5 nm of source and 2.5 nm of channel regions of graphene nanoribbon tunneling field-effect transistor (GNR-TFET), we propose a new bandgap-engineered (BE) GNR-TFET. Simulation of the suggested device is done based on non-equilibrium Green’s function (NEGF) method by a mode-space approach...

A New Stress Based Approach for Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis

This article demonstrates a new approach for nonlinear finite element analysis. The methodology is very suitable and gives very accurate results in linear as well as in nonlinear range of the material behavior. Proposed methodology can be regarded as stress based finite element analysis as it is required to define the stress distribution within the structural body with structural idealization a...
